The leadership of the overseas development agency of the Catholic Bishops of Ireland, Trócaire, has launched its annual Lenten Appeal, Trócaire Box, aimed at reaching out to the “millions of people in hunger in Somalia”.
In a report published Monday, February 20, the entity's officials say the Trocaire Boxes, the funds contributed through the boxes and displayed in schools, churches, and homes in Ireland, have in the past helped "tens of millions of people around the world”.
“Trócaire today (Tuesday Feb 21st) marked its 50th anniversary with the launch of its annual Lenten Appeal which this year will support the millions of people in hunger in Somalia,” the officials say.
Trócaire Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Caoimhe de Barra, says that the organization's 50th Lenten appeal "is focusing on Somalia, where repeated failed rains have led to nearly eight million people – almost half of Somalia’s population – struggling to find food."
“Millions of people are facing the prospect of starving to death. Thousands have already died. This is a shocking scandal," Trócaire CEO says.
