Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Jean-Marie Vianney Twagirayezu who has been serving as Secretary General of Caritas Rwanda as Bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Kibungo in the country in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa, where the African Great Lakes region and Southeast Africa converge.
The latest administrative change in the Rwandan Catholic Diocese that has been vacant since November 2018 when Antione Cardinal Kambanda was transferred to the Archdiocese of Kigali was made public on Monday, February 20 by the Holy See Press Office.
Cardinal Kambanda, who served as Bishop of Kibungo since May 2013, has been the Apostolic Administrator of the Episcopal See.
Born in July 1960, Mons. Twagirayezu started his formation to the Priesthood after completing studies in Commerce and Accounting in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and gaining work experience in a state-owned company.
Bishop-elect Twagirayezu was ordained a Priest for the country’s Diocese of Nyundo in October 1995 after completing theological studies at St. Charles Borromeo Major Seminary of Nyakibanda, in the Diocese of Kabgayi.
