Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, the Apostolic Nuncio in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as the representative of the Holy See to the United Nations and Specialized Institutions in Geneva.
Archbishop Balestrero is also to serve at the World Trade Organization (WTO) and Holy See Representative at the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The appointment of the Italian-born Archbishop as the Holy See Permanent Observer to the UN was announced Wednesday, June 21 and published by the Holy See Press Office.
He succeeds Nigerian-born Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, who was, on March 15, appointed Secretary for the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization.
Born in Genoa, Italy, in 1966 to an American mother and an Italian father, Archbishop Balestrero was ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Rome at the age of 26.
