The newly consecrated Catholic Bishop of Kasana-Luweero Diocese in Uganda has been urged to be fearless in his mission as shepherd of the Ugandan Episcopal See, and to remain firm in faith to the Lord.

In his homily during the August 5 consecration of Bishop Lawrence Mukasa, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kampala highlighted poverty and diseases among challenges that await the new Bishop in his task and assured him of God’s protection and guidance.

“Bishops having been appointed by the Holy Spirit, are successors of the apostles as pastors of souls. Together with the Supreme pontiff, and under his authority, they continue with the work of Christ, the eternal pastor,” Archbishop Ssemogerere said, and added, “Dear Bishop Mukasa, the Lord chooses you, He is going to anoint you to bring glad tidings to the people of Kasae Lweero through your service as their shepherd.”

The Ugandan Catholic Archbishop said, “Fear not for the Lord is with you, be confident and remain firm in faith.”

He reminded Mons. Mukasa of the tasks awaiting him, saying, “Dear brother Mukasa, a threefold ministry awaits you. You are to teach through the proclamation of the gospel, you are to sanctify the people through the celebration of the sacraments, you are to govern through the promotion of the communion in the Church.”

The Ugandan Catholic Church leader also briefed the Bishop-elect of challenges in the Diocese, including poverty, HIV/AIDs, land grabbing and human sacrifice among others.

“St. Paul cautions you to keep watch over yourself and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you to oversee. Serve the Lord with all humility amid the fears and trials that will come to you,” he said.

Archbishop Ssemogerere continued, “We are praying for you. That the mission the Lord has entrusted to you may be brought to perfection.”

“We also commit to supporting you in every possible way. The flock of Christ is committed to follow you learning from your teachings of word and example,” he added.

He appealed to the people of God to “welcome and embrace with faith God’s will for us.”

The Archbishop further urged members of the Clergy and Laity to remain obedient to their new Bishop and collaborate with him. “Just as you loved me, love him more, just like you supported me, support him more.”

Pope Francis appointed Bishop Mukasa as the Bishop for Kasana-Luweero on April 29.

The native of Nabwiri in the Archdiocese of Kampala was born in March 1957 and was incardinated in the Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana in June 1984.

Prior to his appointment as Vicar General of Kiyinda-Mityana in 2018, the Bishop-elect served as Parish Priest of the Bukalagi Parish.

In his maiden speech, Bishop Mukasa promised to renew cooperation and collaboration with the Ugandan government for the good of people in the area.
