Catholic Church institutions and other Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) that have relied on donor funding for their sustainability have been advised to seek “alternative ways” for resource mobilization to sustain their projects during a two-day workshop held at a Catholic institution of higher learning in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, with participants advised to become aware of “donor fatigue.”

“Because of the donor fatigue and other factors, organizations have to learn alternative ways of mobilizing resources for sustainability,” the Program Coordinator of The Leaders Guild (TLG), Sr. Margaret Mutiso told ACI Africa in reference to the key highlights of the two-day workshop at the Nairobi-based Tangaza University College (TUC) that brought together some 83 participants from nine Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and 17 Religious Congregations across Africa.

TLG is a leadership development programme aimed at developing holistic servant leaders and is hosted at TUC.

Sr. Mutiso underscored the importance of resource mobilization skills for any leader saying, “like now we have this donor fatigue, organizations have to learn alternative ways of mobilizing resources for sustainability."

"We hope that by the end of the workshop they will have mastered these skills and also know how to write winning proposals," the Kenyan-born nun said during the Friday, February 28 interview.

As a way of following up on participants and ensuring that the participants master the skills taught, the member of the Congregation of Daughters of the Sacred Heart told ACI Africa that TLG organizes competitions on proposal writing.

“We usually carry out proposal writing competitions and award the winners with some little money to boost their initiatives,” Sr. Mutiso said and revealed that they have already funded 12 projects.

Besides competitions, Sr. Mutiso said, "We usually have boot camps and a process of getting the proposals and give feedback to the participants."

She added in reference to Conrad N. Hilton foundation, which funds TLG programs, “Our donor allows us to run this competition as a way of encouraging the participants to master the skills acquired from the workshop.”

While training the participants, Sr. Consolata Aloo of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Ann (FSSA) said, “Funds from external donors/benefactors are diminishing and there is a call to self-reliance.”

For this reason, the Kenyan-born nun explained that resource mobilization is important as organizations will “achieve a higher degree of sustainability” and “ensure continuity of their mission work.”

The Franciscan nun stressed in her address to the workshop participants shared with ACI Africa, “Sustainability is not just about money but it is the willingness to change and meet the needs of time.”

She underlined the value of good leadership in organizations saying, “the leader promotes sustainability, members support sustainability.”

The February 27-28 workshop was held under the theme, “Resource Mobilization, Proposal Writing and Accountability.”

Topics on resource mobilization and accountability, proposal writing, sustainability and self-reliance were covered during the training.
