All is set to welcome Stephen Ameyu Martin Cardinal Mulla of South Sudan’s Catholic Archdiocese of Juba who was created with 20 others at the September 30 Consistory.

Addressing journalists Thursday, October 19, the Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba said the entire South Sudan is set to receive Cardinal Ameyu on October 30.

“We are set now as a Church and as a country to receive the Cardinal after he comes from the Synod on Synodality which has been ongoing in Rome,” Bishop Santo Loku Pio Doggale said, adding that a committee has already been constituted to work on the Cardinal’s reception.

The 53-year-old Auxiliary Bishop who started his Episcopal Ministry in February 2011 in the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba highlighted the program for the reception of Cardinal Ameyu.

“We have organized a grand reception at the airport. Key government dignitaries and Church officials have been invited to brace the occasion. Some cultural activities including dances will also be performed. We are looking at a big attendance from various parishes in the country,” he explained.

“We are inviting the public, all our Catholics, friends of the Catholic Church, the Christian Community, and the people of Juba to turn up in big numbers to celebrate this gift given to us by Pope Francis on the very day of our independence, July 9,” the Church leader said.

Bishop Loku further indicated that from the airport, “there will be a procession and our people are set to line up from the airport right to the Cathedral.”

Asked about the significance of the creation of Cardinal in South Sudan since the country’s independence on 9 July 2011, he said, “It is very important to the country, it is like cementing our independence.”

“The position of Cardinal is very important because we shall have a seat in the Vatican around the Holy Father to make universal decisions about the Catholic faith,” he said.

Bishop Loku added that the elevation for South Sudan is “a gift and blessing”, and added, “For us means that we have matured and that now we can participate in the decisions of the Church. This is a full recognition by the Pope to the Christian faith in the Republic of South Sudan.”
