The Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) has challenged graduands at a Kenya-based regional institution of higher learning to be proponents of truth, “always” standing for their faith and living a life of service.

In his speech during the 42nd graduation ceremony at the main campus of CUEA in Karen, Nairobi, Bishop Charles Kasonde said, “My plea to graduands is to stand for the truth and always stand for your faith. If you pray, remain honest, and stand committed to serving society. You will have already given your life a purpose.”

Bishop Kasonde emphasized during the Friday, October 27 event, “Graduands, you have already chosen a promising path by pursuing higher education. You now ought to take the path of truth; and by doing so, you will find yourselves with a helper at every time no matter how difficult the terrain you have chosen may be.”

“Your faith is your truth whether you are a Christian, a Muslim or a Hindu,” the Chancellor of the Catholic institution under the auspices of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) said, adding, “We in CUEA enable you to testify to this truth through your career as a scholar, professional, or entrepreneur.”

The Local Ordinary of Zambia’s Solwezi Diocese further said CUEA trains students to testify to their faith wherever they are in their daily encounters.

During the October 27 event that was held under the theme, Transformed by Truth: Embarking on a Life of Purpose”, some 3,162 graduands from the institution that was established in 1984 and her constituent colleges were conferred Diplomas, Bachelor's Degrees, Masters Degrees, and Ph.Ds.

Speaking at the same event, the Chairman of CUEA Council, Bishop Paul Kariuki Njiru reminded the graduands that they had been equipped with “enough skills and aptitude to embark on a life with individualized purpose that is guided by truth and ethics.”

“In a world where truth is elusive, there is a need for the Church and other institutions to ensure that championing the truth and ethical standards are an integral part of our mission,” the Catholic Bishop of the recently erected Diocese of Wote in Kenya said, and added, “Graduands, what I ask of you is to have the courage to change and transform the world.”

The Kenyan Catholic Bishop who chairs the Commission for Education and Religious Education (CERE) of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) challenged the graduands to “always stand up for what is ethical, what is right and what is just.”

“Inspire a culture of integrity and become agents of transformation in this point. Do not be afraid. Be prophetic and be charismatic in this agenda,” he said.

By championing ethics in society and their workplaces, Bishop Kariuki said the graduands will become a shining example of CUEA’s character.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of CUEA, Fr. Stephen Mbugua Ngari, said that the graduating class of 2023 “has been formed holistically and is ready to serve Church and society as ethical leaders in their respective areas of specialization.”

The member of the Clergy of Kenya’s Nakuru Diocese reminded the graduands that in transitioning to CUEA alumni, they are moving on with “universally accepted ethical values and professionalism that is highly coveted today”, gained from the Kenya-based institution.
