Members of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) have expressed their spiritual solidarity with victims of the tragedy at Senseli Open Pit Mine in Chingola District in the Catholic Diocese of Ndola.

At least 30 miners were reportedly buried after heavy rains caused landslides that buried them in illegal copper mine pits on the night of November 30.

In a Friday, December 15 statement, ZCCB Secretary General, Fr. Francis Mukosa, says that Catholic Bishops “join the Government of the Republic of Zambia and the citizenry at large in (expressing) heartfelt condolences to the families that have lost their beloved ones during the recent fatal accident.”

“The Conference prays for God’s consolation and strength for all the bereaved families,” says Fr. Mukosa, and adds, “To the survivor in the said mine accident the Conference wishes quick recovery and prays for God’s powerful healing hand to rest upon him.”

On December 11, the Zambian government held a mass burial for nine of the 11 miners who lost their lives in the accident. The bodies of two of the miners are yet to be identified.

Speaking when he visited the site located around 400 kms north of the capital city, Lusaka, on December 5 visit, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his “deepest sympathy” to families whose loved ones died in the mine accident.

He said that his government is committed to empowering small-scale miners with mining skills and equipment.

“It is our duty as a government and as a people to harness our human resources by facilitating a secure work environment through stringent safety regulations,” President Hichilema said.
