Secretary General of Ethiopia Conference of Catholic Bishops Appointed Coadjutor Bishop

The Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia (CBCE) has been appointed Coadjutor Bishop for the Eparchy of Emdeber in the Horn of Africa nation.

Pope Francis’ appointment of Mons. Teshome Fikre Woldetensae was made public on Saturday, December 16 by the Holy See Press Office and confirmed by members of CBCE on the same day.

Born in June 1972 in Guraghe, Mons. Fikre was ordained a Priest for the Eparchy of Emdeber in January 1998.

As a Priest, he has served in various capacities, including Parish Priest of Attat; Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Emdeber for a period of 10 years; and national pastoral coordinator (from 2017).

The holder of a doctorate in Oriental Canon Law, who is familiar with Ge’ez liturgical language has been serving as Secretary General of CBCE since 2019.

When consecrated Bishop, Mons. Fikre is to assist 74-year-old Bishop Musie Ghebreghiorghis who has been at the helm of Emdeber Eparchy since February 2004.

With the right to succeed Bishop Ghebreghiorghis, the Coadjutor Bishop-elect is to serve as the immediate collaborator of the Eritrean-born member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFMCap) in the Eparchy that measures 12,000 square-kilometer with a population of 27,070 Catholics representing six percent of the total population, according to the 2021 statistics.

Emdeber Eparchy was erected in November 2003 with territory taken from the Metropolitan Archeparchy of Addis Ababa.
