The Job Service Office of the members of the Religious Institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) in Rwanda organized a month-long campaign to raise awareness of the need to embrace vocation and technical education in the East African nation.

In a report published Tuesday, December 19, SDB officials say that the campaign that utilized various forms of the media to reach the people also aimed at making known learning institutions under the auspices of the Salesians in the country.

“The Salesian Job Service Office in Rwanda embarked on a month-long media campaign to raise awareness about the importance of technical and vocational education while also enhancing the visibility of Salesian technical and vocational schools across the country,” the officials say.

In the report, officials of the U.S. development arm of the SDB, Salesian Missions add, “The campaign utilized popular local news websites, social media, community radio, and the National Broadcasting Agency.”

Don Bosco Tech Africa (DBTA) funded the campaign that showcased success stories of graduates who have benefited from technical and vocational education at Salesian schools, according to SDB officials.

They say that the graduates who had either created their successful businesses or secured employment in reputable companies were a source of inspiration to learners at the technical and vocational schools that were visited during the campaign.

“The media campaign’s reach was extensive, targeting the entire population of Rwanda, which has more than 13 million people, a majority of whom are young individuals,” SDB officials say, adding, “The impact was evident from the positive feedback received.”

In the report, the national job service officer at the Salesian Planning and Development Office expresses optimism about the media campaign, saying it is set to attract more learners to the institutions as more people have been informed about the value of technical and vocational institutions.

By highlighting the positive outcomes, Twizeyimana Emmanuel says that “the media campaign effectively shifted perceptions and created a wave of enthusiasm among young people.”

The media campaign, Salesian officials say, is to be followed by an exhibition that will involve bringing together all three Salesian technical and vocational schools in the East African nation.

They add that there will also “be a roundtable conference to share best practices, workshops and other related activities.”

According to the December 19 report, Salesian missionaries are said to be at the forefront of providing a range of educational and social development services in Rwanda.

“Poor youth can access programs including health services, nutrition, education, and general support services that help them to lead healthy and productive lives,” the report indicates.
