Pope Francis arrived Tuesday in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, the first stop in the pope’s four-country tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania. The trip is expected to be the longest and most challenging international voyage of his pontificate to date.
The pope appealed for peace in Gaza and for humanitarian aid to continue and also expressed his closeness to the people of Burkina Faso after a terrorist attack there on Aug 24.
The pope will make a one-day stopover in Luxembourg on Sept. 26 before visiting the Catholic universities of Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve Sept. 26–29.
“We can no longer watch the drama of shipwrecks, caused by the cruel trafficking and the fanaticism of indifference,” the pope said Sept. 22.
Pope Francis said that his thoughts are with Ukraine on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
The motto of the Sept. 13–15 visit, “Messengers of Peace and Unity,” is written in Kazakh across the top of the logo and Russian across the bottom.
