Catholic Priests serving in Cape Verde’s Catholic Diocese of Santiago are set to improve their knowledge on the Second Vatican Council Documents in an upcoming training in the Diocese.

The training that the Diocesan Commission for Christian Education is spearheading in collaboration with Catholic University School (EUCatólica) of Cape Verde, is also aimed at strengthening interpersonal relationships between Priests in the Diocese.

Speaking to Rádio Nova de Maria Cape Verde,  Fr. José Eduardo Afonso , the coordinator of the National Commission for Catholic Moral and Religious Education in Schools, said 36 Priests are expected to attend the February 5-8 training.

“In the first instance, we're going to talk a little about the presbyterate, which stems above all from the need to promote the strengthening of fraternal interpersonal relationships between Priests,” Fr. Afonso said Tuesday, January 23.

He added, “This has to do with our relationship, with our affectivity, with our maturity, with the exercise of power as ministers, which is at the service of the people.”

“We will dedicate two days in the study of the Second Vatican Council documents,” Fr. Afonso said.

He said the Local Ordinary of Santiago, Arlindo Cardinal Gomes Furtado “asked the Diocesan Commission for Christian Education to guide and facilitate this training but we are counting on the collaboration of Priests and Lay people from the Vicariates of São Tiago, Sul and Maio, Fogo and Brava to help us.”

According Fr. Afonso, the training will also be extended to lay people. “We also want to count on lay people who will also help us reflect on these documents.”

“As formators or facilitators of this reflection on the Vatican II documents, we have Priests who work in the diocese who have been invited and challenged to each guide the reflection on a specific constitution,” the Catholic Priest said.

He added, “We are counting on the presence of Spiritan Priests, as well as Diocesan Priests to help us with preparations for the training.”
