Churches and faith-based organizations across Namibia have been urged to utilize their platforms and the vast resources at their disposal to make “a tangible impact” in mitigating the dangers of climate change.

Speaking during a workshop that the Catholic Archdiocese of Windhoek organized, Innocent Haingura, the Environmental scientist said that the crucial position that churches hold in society allows them to address the issue of climate change.

“Churches have a unique platform to make a tangible impact on the ever-increasing dangers posed by climate change,” Dr. Haingurasaid in a Tuesday, March 12 report following the event that was themed, “Desertification, Climate Change, and Land Degradation.”

The environmental scientist is said to have stressed “the key role faith communities can play in leading initiatives that mitigate the adverse effects of environmental degradation.”

Speaking at the workshop that took place at Karibib, Erongo Region in the Catholic Archdiocese of Windhoek, Fr. Albertus Sheehama, the dean of the Western deanery that is part of the Namibian Archdiocese said that the Catholic Church has “vast resources” at its disposal to combat climate change.

“Through its extensive network of congregations, the Catholic Church is well-positioned to make a positive impact,” Fr. Sheehamasaid at the event that sought to highlight the “urgent need for the church to take an active role in reversing the tide of climate change, starting from the parish levels.”

The Namibian Priest emphasized that the Catholic church has both the duty and the capability to lead by example in fostering environmental consciousness and action among its followers.

Fr. Sheehama said that faith and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand, creating a powerful force for change in the face of global climate challenges.
