Youths in Nigeria face numerous challenges, which the government needs to pay attention to, Bishop John Ebebe Ayah of Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Uyo has said.

In an interview with ACI Africa on the sidelines of a three-day leadership Retreat that the Pastoral Agents Department of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) organized, bringing together National Chaplains, Sister Advisors, and Presidents of Lay Apostolate Groups in Nigeria, Bishop Ayah said the challenges are profound, and that the reasons behind the 2020 EndSARS protests have not been addressed.

“The challenges facing Nigerian youths are multifaceted and profound, encompassing high unemployment rates, limited access to quality education, and inadequate healthcare services. Economic opportunities remain scarce, perpetuating cycles of poverty and thwarting aspirations for personal and professional growth,” he said during the July 12 interview.

The Nigerian Catholic Bishop added, “Our young people today follow events very closely. The insurrection by the youth in 2020 was something for us to begin to think about how to address the plight of our young people.”

“It was quelled down the last time, but it's like a time bomb brewing and I tell you sincerely, Nigeria as a nation will not survive another EndSARS protest organized by the youths over government neglect and hardship because the youths have over the years not been cared for,” Bishop Ayah said.

He further warned, “If we don't try to attend to the issues when it erupts again, it's going to be too bad. Let's not push it under the carpet and think that it's gone. Our leaders must try to address some of these issues by attending to our young people.”

The Nigerian Catholic Bishop, who started his Episcopal Ministry in January 2007 as Bishop of Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Ogoja went on to reassure youths in Africa’s most populous nation of God’s continued presence in their lives amid challenges.

“Stay on the side of God. No matter how difficult it is, God will always be there for us to provide the answers in our lives. Human beings can frustrate you, but God will always be on your side,” the Local Ordinary of Uyo said.

He highlighted challenges the people of God in Nigeria face.

“Life is so tough. The economy is so harsh at the moment. People hardly eat well. Food is so expensive. Transportation is so expensive,” the 64-year-old Catholic Church leader, who serves as Chairman of the Laity Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) lamented.

He posed, “Coupled with the insecurity in the country, what good is that going to bring to us? We're asking the government that. The government can better answer that question.”

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, John Olorunfemi Cardinal Onaiyekan attributed Nigeria’s current economic challenges to bad electoral process during the 2023 general elections.

“If you have a bad election, you are going to have a bad government. If you have a bad election, and you bring the Archangel to come and be president, he will not do anything. So, the journey is still long,” Cardinal Onaiyekan told ACI Africa July 12.
