Plans are underway for a liturgical blessing of drivers and vehicles in Angola’s Catholic Archdiocese of Luanda amid a rise in reported cases of road accidents in the Southern African nation.

Road accidents are the second cause of death in Angola, after malaria, and continue to be a concern for national authorities, according to VERANGOLA July 16 report that highlights the fatal accident near Cuito River in Bié Province, Central Angola, that claimed the lives of some 15 people and dozens more seriously injured.

Luanda Province has had more road accidents than any other region in the Southern African nation, according to a report.

In a statement issued Wednesday, July 17, Luanda Archdiocesan Pastoral Coordinator says Parishes and outstations have been informed about the blessing ritual that is scheduled for Sunday, July 21.

“The blessing of drivers and vehicles is a sign that God accompanies us and we must accompany each other in caring for this supreme good, which is life,” Fr.  Adelino Calonda says.

Fr. Calonda adds, “It will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the fact that driving on roads is a public good and we must all take care of it, but above all we must safeguard everyone's life.”

The main highlight of the July 21 spiritual exercise is to take place at Our Lady of Peace Center of St. John Clariabrias Parish of Luanda Archdiocese, the Angolan Catholic Priests says.

He implores, “Let us care for each other. Let us be co-responsible for each other's lives.”
