The newly Consecrated Local Ordinary of the  Catholic Diocese of Wa in Ghana will have to stock anew his wardrobe as he begins his Episcopal Ministry, having been in possession of “only jeans”, he has said.

Bishop Francis Bomansaan who was speaking during his Thanksgiving Mass at St. Andrew’s Cathedral of his Episcopal See on August 3, the day after his Consecration, recounted his experiences since his Episcopal appointment was made public on May 22, and how a statement by a Vatican Cardinal has “transformed” him.

“I have to change my wardrobe because many of my confreres know that I have only jeans in my wardrobe and I have only one black trousers for official duties and that was the only black trousers I wore to the Vatican,” he said.

The Ghanaian member of the Society of the Missionaries of Africa (M.Afr.) went on to recall the special treatment he received at the airport in Ghana’s capital city, Accra.

“When I arrived in Accra, I felt cold. As soon as I came out of the plane, there was protocol that picked me into the VIP lounge. I have never been to that VIP lounge. I was there but more or less shivering asking where I was,” Bishop Bomansaan shared.

“Then I said what is this all about? It’s not my lifestyle,” he recalled.

An encounter with a Cardinal at the Vatican assuaged his discomfort and fears, he said, and went on to share, “What has given me courage is a statement that was made to me when I was at the Vatican. When I finally left the Vatican, the Cardinal told me, ‘Your nomination is not about yourself nor your own convenience’. And that shut me up.”

“Even before I left Rome, this statement has transformed me and what I have witnessed yesterday and today has transformed me,” the Local Ordinary of Wa further said during the August 3 Thanksgiving Mass following his Episcopal Consecration.

He went on to thank all those, who facilitated the event of his Consecration, adding that he has been humbled.

“You have shown me love and I promise you, I accepted this appointment out of obedience and service to you in the Diocese. And I want to say, I give you my whole heart, (and) my whole being as far as I can to my capacity and ability,” Bishop Bomansaan said.
