Days after the passing on of Archbishop Yves-Nicodème Anani Barrigah-Benissan of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lomé in Togo, the Apostolic Nunciature in the West African nation has announced the appointment of Bishop Isaac Jogues Agbémenya Kodjo Gaglo of the country’s Aného Diocese as the Apostolic Administrator of the Metropolitan See.

“The Dicastery for Evangelization having received the special faculty of the Holy Father” has appointed Bishop Gaglo to temporarily administer the Archdiocese of Lomé, reads in part the statement issued Sunday, August 11.

“The Apostolic Nunciature would like to entrust the Archdiocese of Lomé and its new apostolic administrator to the fervent prayers of the Church Family of God in Togo,” continues the statement that was read by the President of the Episcopal Conference of Togo (CET), Bishop Benoît Comlan Messan Alowonou, at Sacred Heart Cathedral of Lomé Catholic Archdiocese.

The Togolese Catholic Archdiocese became vacant when Archbishop Barrigah-Benissan, known for his passion for music and arts, passed on at DOGTA-LAFIE Hospital in Lomé on August 4.

Born in October 1958 in Kpémé, Bishop Gaglo was ordained a Priest in August 1985 by St. Pope John Paul II, for the Archdiocese of Lomé.

In remarks shortly after the announcement of his appointment as Apostolic Administrator of Lomé, Bishop Gaglo eulogized the late Archbishop as “a good and loyal servant”.

“Our emotions are running high; questions pierce our hearts and can only be answered by the faith we profess. The Church and the mission call us to move forward, whatever the situation. The work undertaken by Archbishop Barrigah-Benissan, a good and loyal servant, a great shepherd of souls, must continue,” he said.

Bishop Gaglo added, “I am humbled to be chosen as Apostolic Administrator for the Archdiocese of Lomé. With God's grace, I pledge to continue his pastoral work with the family of God.”

The late Catholic Archbishop had been battling cancer. In recognition of his passion for music and drama, he was awarded the Togolese Grand Theatre Prize for Literature 2020 for his play, “The Royal Throne”, which was published by the New Africans Edition of Togo in 1993.
