“Great support to catechumens, families”: Bissau-Guinean Administrator on Brazilian Diocese’s Donation of 25,000 Bibles

The donation of 25,000 Bibles by Brazil’s Catholic Archdiocese of Paraná to the Catholic Diocese of Bafatá in Guinea-Bissau will go a long way in helping Catechumens and members of families grow in their Christian faith, the Diocesan Administrator of Bafatá Diocese has said.

Speaking at the official reception of the donation on Sunday, August 18, Fr. Lúcio Bradghani said the contribution is expected to play a “crucial role in supporting the spiritual development of the faithful and strengthening the Church's evangelization efforts in the region.”

“The arrival of these Bibles is a great support to catechumens, especially those who are preparing to receive the sacraments,” Fr. Bradghani said, and added, “Many families, who until now did not have a copy, will finally have one at home.”

“We see this as a tool in the hands of individuals and families to help them grow in their Christian life, in social life, in dialogue, and in encounters with people of other religions,” the Diocesan Administrator of the Bissau-Guinean Episcopal See said.

He reiterated, “The impact we expect is that our faithful, and not only them, will experience growth in their Christian life.”

Fr. Bradghani further said that the distribution of the Bibles would begin after the rainy season, so they reach parishes and communities across the Diocese.

He lauded the partnership between Paraná Archdiocese in Brazil and Bafatá Diocese in Guinea-Bissau as providing access to the word of God.

“All the young adolescents who are on the journey of sacramental preparation, all families who clearly need to have a Bible available at home to grow in their Christian life, will benefit from this initiative.” The Diocesan Administrator said.

He went on to highlight the challenges the people of God in the tropical country on West Africa’s Atlantic coast face in obtaining religious materials, noting that “Bibles are often difficult to source locally.”

“Here in Guinea-Bissau, we have great difficulty in getting Bibles, which clearly have to come from abroad. So, with this partnership, we now have the availability to support our catechumens,” Fr. Bradghani said.

More in Africa

The Bibles that arrived in Guinea-Bissau on July 26 were first received in the Catholic Diocese of Bissau by the Local Ordinary, Bishop José Lampra Cà

Earlier, in 2017, the Archdiocese of Paraná offered 20,000 Bibles to support the spiritual needs of the people of God Guinea-Bissau.

Reflecting on this ongoing partnership, Fr. Bradghani said, “This is a symbolic gesture that demonstrates walking together and sharing. The donation of the Word of God, and the sharing of the books of the Bible, is a symbolic gesture that manifests the total availability of this Church to walk with us, to share with us not only the difficulties but also an investment in the missionary announcement of evangelization in this land.”
