John Luchembe, the Lector, who collapsed while taking the First Reading at Holy Mass in Malawi and later died at a hospital has been remembered for dedicated commitment to Catholic faith.

The late Mr. Luchembe was taking the First Reading on Wednesday, August 21 during the 12h30 Mass at Christ the King Cathedral of Ndola Catholic Archdiocese in Malawi, when he collapsed. He was rushed to Ndola Teaching Hospital (NTH), where he was pronounced dead, an August 22 report posted on Facebook indicates.

Efforts to resuscitate him after collapsing failed, the report quotes Christ the King Cathedral Administrator, Fr. Lewis Mutachila, as saying about the late 56-year-old Malawian Lector.

“Mr. Luchembe took the first Reading as usual and concluded but when he started reading the Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 23) in the process he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital,” Fr. Lewis is also quoted as saying, adding, “Diagnosis report indicated that he suffered a heart attack.”

The Malawian Catholic Priest goes on to eulogize the late Mr. Luchembe “for his dedication and commitment to faith, duty and for his love to proclaim the written Word of God as a Lector.”

“He was always available whenever we called upon (him) to help us with works at Church. He was a well-respected man, one of the Catholic Men's Organization (CMO) leaders,” Fr. Lewis says.

He adds, “We have lost a father to one of our Seminarians, Br. John Luchembe, Junior. MHSRIEP (May his soul rest in eternal peace).”
