Provincial Superior of Comboni Missionaries in CAR Appointed Bishop of Kaga-Bandoro Diocese

Pope Francis has appointed the Provincial Director of the Congregation of the Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus (M.C.C.J) in the Central Africa Republic (CAR) the Local Ordinary of Kaga-Bandoro Diocese.

The Holy See Press Office published the appointment of Mons. Victor Hugo Castillo Matarrita on Thursday, September 5.

Born in March 1963 in Mansión, Costa Rica, Bishop-elect Castillo Matarrita entered the Congregation of M.C.C.K and made his perpetual profession in September 1991 in Paris, France. 

Mons. Castillo Matarrita was ordained a Priest in August 1992 after completing his philosophical and theological studies.

As a Priest he has served in various capacities including Missionary in Central Africa, Parish Priest in Grimari; Formator and Local Superior at the Combonian Postulancy in Bangui.

He has also served as the Provincial Delegate and President of the Conference of Major Superiors in Central Africa.

Outside the Central African nation, the Bishop-elect has served as Formator of postulants in San José and Counsellor of the Central America Delegation; and Provincial Superior for Central America.

When ordained Bishop, Mons. Castillo Matarrita will become the fourth Local Ordinary of the Diocese that became vacant in March this year following the death of Bishop Zbigniew Tadeusz Kusy who had served the Diocese since his Episcopal Ordination in August 2014.

The Diocese measures 95,000 square kilometers with a population of 114,314 Catholics representing 36.5 percent of the total population, according to the 2021 statistics.

Kaga-Bandoro Diocese, which was established in June 1997 as the Archdiocese of Bangui before being changed to its current status, is part of the Ecclesiastical province of Bangui.
