Archbishop Augustine Obiora Akubeze of Nigeria’s Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City has called upon members of the Canon Law Society of Nigeria (CLSN) to reflect on the significance of God's commandments and the Church’s legal norms as instruments of liberation.
In his homily during the opening Mass of the 36th Annual General Convention of CLSN, Archbishop Akubeze said God’s law should not be viewed as a “restrictive force but as a guiding path to salvation.”
He underscored the importance of what CLSN does in ensuring that the Church’s legal framework upholds justice and leads the faithful closer to God.
“The law of God is not an instrument of coercion, but a source of liberation, protection, and the safeguarding of rights,” Archbishop Akubeze said on Tuesday, September 24 at the event that is being held at St. Paul Parish of the Archdiocese of Benin City.
He invited CLSN members to develop a deeper appreciation of the ecclesiastical norms they work to interpret and apply, urging them to always give honest canonical opinions in service of God’s people.
