The Bishop of Mozambique’s Catholic Diocese of Pemba has expressed concern about persistent violent conflicts in the Southern African nation’s Cabo Delgado Province that his Episcopal See covers.

In a Tuesday, October 8 report, Bishop António Juliasse Ferreira Sandramo is quoted as telling the Catholic Pontifical and Charity Foundation, Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) Portugal, that the lack of peace in the region ravaged by terrorism for the last seven years has increased the suffering of the people of God.

“In Mozambique, we have no peace, and I feel that with statements like these, there is a lack of solidarity with the people of Cabo Delgado,” Bishop Juliasse is quoted as saying, and adds, “It often seems like the problem of Cabo Delgado belongs only to the province and not to Mozambique as a whole.”

Still, he goes on to say, “we are doing what is in our nature—standing by the people, assisting those we can, and offering whatever help we receive.”

The Mozambican Catholic Bishop commends the partnership with ACN describing the Catholic charity foundation as “a helping hand” that has been indispensable during the most critical moments.

“They are always ready to provide something that helps us feel useful, which in turn allows us to save the lives of our brothers and sisters,” he says.

The Local Ordinary of Pemba Diocese since May 2022 following his 8 March 2022 transfer from Mozambique’s Catholic Archdiocese of Maputo, where he was serving as Auxiliary Bishop decried the “immense challenges” the people of God in a section of his Diocese face amid insecurity.

For the last seven years, he laments, the people of God in Cabo Delgado have faced “immense challenges due to insecurity, with children unable to attend school, health facilities destroyed, and farming disrupted.”

“Cabo Delgado has no peace. The people are living in fear and uncertainty,” he further laments, adding that despite the celebration of peace in the country, the Northernmost Province of Mozambique continues to grapple with security challenges.

“Since I've been in Pemba, I find it difficult to celebrate October 4 as Peace Day. In reality, we should be marking it as the Day of the Rome Agreements, because peace, in Cabo Delgado, does not exist,” the Mozambican Catholic Bishop, who coordinated Pope Francis’ visit to Mozambique in September 2019 says.
