The outcome of Guinea-Bissau’s snap parliamentary poll scheduled to take place on November 24 should be for the good of the people of God in the country on West Africa’s Atlantic coast, Bishop José Lampra Cà has said.

The Local Ordinary of Bissau Catholic Diocese in Guinea-Bissau, who was speaking at the launch of the new pastoral year in his Episcopal See on Wednesday, October 9 called upon those involved in organizing the election to realize a “free, fair, and transparent” process.

The planned Bissau-Guinean legislative poll follows President Umaro Sissoco Embalo’s decision to dissolve the opposition-led parliament in December 2023. He claimed that an "attempted coup" had blocked his return from the COP28 climate conference.

In his October 9 address, Bishop Lampra Cà has been quoted as saying, “At this moment, the most important thing is to ask God to help those in politics, to do their best and for the result that will come out of the electoral process to be mainly good for the people of Guinea-Bissau.”

He called for unity among Bissau-Guineans so that the electoral process takes place in a “peaceful atmosphere”, and added, “We call on all those involved in the electoral process to ensure they are free, fair, and transparent.”

The Local Ordinary of Bissau urged Christians in the country to realize their duty of praying “for the success of this election.”

In his October 9 address, Bishop Lampra Cá urged the people of God under his pastoral care to pay keen attention to the theme of the 2024/2025 pastoral year, “A Church in the Service of Hope, Reconciliation, and Peace”.

Hope, he said, needs to serve as a compass for the people of God and that reconciliation should guide Christians to live according to God's will, while peace should allow people to live freely.

“Every year is an opportunity given by God for Christians to renew their negative attitudes," the Local Ordinary of Bissau Diocese since his installation in January 2022 said.
