Catholic University in Cape Verde to Realize Double Projects That “go beyond traditional academic training”

The Catholic University of Cape Verde (EU Católica) is set to launch the construction of two projects tailored to meet the social needs of the institution of higher learning, the leadership of the university has said.

Addressing journalists Wednesday, October 9, EU Católica Director, Fr. José Eduardo Afonso, said that when realized, the double projects will provide “solutions to problems that go beyond traditional academic training.”

The first project, São João Paulo II Psycho-Spiritual Care Center, “aims to provide psychological and spiritual support to people facing high levels of stress, depression and exhaustion,” Fr. Afonso said.

The construction of the Center is to start towards the end of this year, pending approval from Cape Verde’s Higher Education Regulatory Agency (ARES), he said.

The Psycho-Spiritual Care Center, Fr. Afonso went on to say, aims to address “the increase in suicide rates and drug use”, which he said are taking a toll on families in the archipelago and island country of West Africa in the central Atlantic Ocean.

“We believe that a higher education institution cannot limit itself to just offering courses but must also respond to social problems and offer concrete solutions to communities,” he said about the facility that is to help beneficiaries overcome emotional challenges and find balance in their respective lives.

The second project, whose construction is to be launched is an “Integrated Educational Center, which aims to offer holistic training, from early childhood to university,” Fr. Afonso said.

The facility, he said, is to “create an environment that guarantees equal educational opportunities, especially for children and young people from disadvantaged areas, such as peripheral neighborhoods and families in vulnerable situations.”

“The vision is to provide an education that is not limited to the academic aspect, but also includes human, social, and spiritual values,” Fr. Afonso said.

He noted that the center is to be built in a space already acquired by the institution and aims to be a model for comprehensive education in Cape Verde.

More in Africa

“We want to show that, even for students from broken families, it is possible to have a quality education that prepares them to compete on an equal footing with those who have more resources,” Fr. Afonso said.

He added, “With these projects, the Catholic University of Cape Verde reinforces its commitment to society and seeks to go beyond traditional academic training, offering services and answers that contribute to the social development and well-being of local communities.”
