Planned Diocesan Youth Day in Cape Verde’s Santiago Catholic Diocese Moment of “encouragement, renewal”: Official

Fr. Samuel Costa

The Diocesan Youth Day in Cape Verde’s Catholic Diocese of Santiago scheduled for November 22-24 is an opportunity for participants to renew their Christian journey, finding encouragement through encounters with youths from other Parish communities, the Diocesan Youth Coordinator has said.

In an interview with Radio Nova de Maria - Cabo Verde reported Tuesday, November 12, Fr. Samuel Costa also spoke about preparations ahead of the three-day event to be realized under the theme, “Those who wait for the Lord shall walk without growing weary” (Isaiah 40:31).

The planned Diocesan Youth Day is an opportunity for “encouragement and renewal for both the youth and the parish,” Fr. Costa said about the event to be held at Sacred Heart Parish of Santiago Diocese.

“It is an opportunity for spiritual growth, formation, and community bonding among the youths,” he added.

The Catholic Priest cautioned against what he described as “a noticeable tendency for youth to be influenced by contemporary trends, drifting away from the Church.”

“While some are actively involved in pastoral life, the majority need significant effort to reconnect with the Church,” Fr. Costa said, adding that despite these challenges, he remains hopeful that the planned Youth Day will inspire deeper engagement with the Christian faith.

“The primary mission of youth ministry is to help young people have a profound encounter with Christ,” he emphasized.

Preparations for the event have been extensive, with Parish and Diocesan teams working closely to ensure its success, the Catholic Youth official in Cape Verde said.

“We have been collaborating since the announcement of Diocesan Youth Day,” the Catholic Priest went on to say about the youth event that he also said “will feature a mix of spiritual reflection, formation, and social activities designed to foster unity and faith.”

“We believe this gathering will strengthen fraternal bonds among the youth and renew their commitment to Christian values,” the Youth Coordinator in Santiago Diocese said.

He thanked young people, who remain active in Catholic Parish-based groups such as scouts and altar servers, despite migration trend, saying, “Many leave, but many also stay.”

“We are blessed with individuals who selflessly offer their time and energy to the Church’s mission,” the Youth Coordinator in Santiago Diocese said ahead of the Diocesan Youth Day that he said is to conclude “on Sunday, November 24, with a sending-off Mass during the Solemnity of Christ the King.”
