Members of the youth ministry at the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC), which includes South Africa, Botswana, and Eswatini, have written to Pope Francis, expressing their gratitude to the Holy Father for his leadership as the Vicar of Christ over the past 11 years.

In the letter, SACBC Youth and Young Adults Chairperson Lesego Zikhali conveyed the sentiments of young people in the region to the 266th Pontiff of the Catholic Church saying that his “teachings are immensely powerful.”

“We are writing this love letter to you, to show our gratitude to you, for being our Father for the past 11 years of your ministry as the Vicar of Christ,” the youths said in the letter dated Sunday, November 24, adding, “Your teachings are immensely powerful.”

They emphasized how Pope Francis had inspired them to live as true ambassadors of Christ, saying “You have helped us to see Christ in others to proclaim good news to the captive.” They also noted how the Holy Father’s example of humility had motivated them to serve others with kindness and creativity.

The youths said that their devotion to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Blessed Benedict Daswa, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. John Bosco is the secret behind their “excessive growth”.

In the one-page letter that was shared with ACI Africa on Wednesday, November 27, the youths emphasized their strong focus on the care for the environment, crediting Pope Francis for helping them view creation from a faith-centered perspective.

They made reference to Pope Francis’ Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit, addressed to young people and the global Church, as well as his encyclical Fratelli Tutti on human fraternity and social friendship. They described these documents as foundational to their youth ministry and emphasized their commitment to sharing these teachings with others.

In the letter the youths also acknowledge Pope Francis’ ministry as a source of inspiration and hope, saying “We wish to say to you that we love you and we are living our lives with the spirit of hope.”

They acknowledg with appreciation the Holy Father’s message to them through the Secretary of the Synod on Synodality Commission for Information during the October 2-27 meeting, saying, “Thank you for sending us a message of hope through Ms. Sheila Pires via video.”

In the message, Pope Francis cautioned young people in South Africa against life’s “traps” of alcohol and drug abuse.

“Dear young people, as you journey through life, be aware of the traps along the way, much like how an animal can be caught in a trap. Life also sets traps to hinder us from continuing our journey,” Pope Francis told Sheila Pires during the October 17 interview.

In the November 24 letter, the youths also highlighted their anticipation of the upcoming “pilgrimage of hope” and their commitment to spreading the message of the Gospel.

The youths drawn from the three Southern African nations have also expressed their eagerness to welcome Pope Francis during their pilgrimage of hope next July and to join the Holy Father at World Youth Day in Seoul, South Korea, in 2027.
