The fifth General Assembly of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja has ended with a call on the people of God to uphold their Catholic identity and spirituality.

In an interview with ACI Africa on the sidelines of the concluding Mass of the November 28-30 general assembly, Archbishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigama of Abuja highlighted the assembly's significance in the geographically expansive Archdiocese.

“Abuja is large, stretching from Bwari to Gwagwalada, Karu, and beyond. With so many Priests, Congregations, and Religious Orders, these gatherings help us stay connected,” the Archbishop told ACI Africa on November 30.

He added, “We must maintain our Catholic identity and spirituality wherever we go. We cannot be part-time Christians or Sunday-only Catholics. We should proudly live out our faith every day.”

Archbishop Kaigama said that the assembly provided an opportunity for prayer, interaction, and collaboration.

This year, the focus was on “Catholic Identity and Spirituality,” a theme chosen to inspire deeper commitment among the faithful.

The Local Ordinary of Abuja expressed optimism about the renewed vigor and unity demonstrated during the day’s events.

“We are a community dedicated to God, guided by His spirit, and committed to spreading His love and teachings. Today, we have taken significant steps to deepen our faith and strengthen our mission,” the Catholic Church leader said.

A key moment during the November 30 Eucharistic celebration was the Consecration of the Archdiocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

“Consecration means setting apart. It signifies that this space is dedicated to God’s purpose, and His blessings will multiply within our archdiocese,” Archbishop Kaigama said.

He added, “Today, we remind ourselves that we belong to God, and God belongs to us. We are open to His graces and guided.”

The Archbishop underscored the spiritual significance of the day, highlighting the importance of creating a dedicated environment for encountering God.

“We want to remain with God, hold on to God, and allow God to direct us in everything we do,” he said.

Also key on the activities of the day was the ordination of 14 as Catholic Priests.

Archbishop Kaigama urged the newly ordained Priests to embrace a life of selflessness, humility, and service, much like Jesus did.

He reminded them of their vow of obedience and their commitment to give their lives entirely to God, without seeking personal gain or recognition.

“My advice to the 14 priests ordained is they should be faithful, selfless, and humble servants," Archbishop Kaigama said.

He also cautioned the new Priests against falling into the temptation of establishing private ministries, which are said to be widespread in the West African country. He advised them to remain focused on their Priestly vocation.

“Any Catholic Priest worth his salt will never contemplate doing any other ministry apart from the Priesthood,” Archbishop Kaigama said.
