Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Embu has urged young people in the East African country to embrace Church sacraments, singling out Matrimony as the sacrament that he says sanctifies couples and ensures that families are holy.

Addressing young people who thronged Subukia National Marian Shrine in the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru for their convention, Bishop Kimani urged the youths not to shy away from marriage.

The Bishop who serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Commission for Youth Apostolate under the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) was responding to concerns that were raised by some of the young people at the event who expressed their fear of getting married.

“Let us not fear the sacraments because it is through sacraments that God comes to us,” Bishop Kimani said at the November 30 National Youth Convention that was organized by the newly created commission. “The sacrament of Matrimony is there because the Church and family needs it,” he said.

The 58-year-old Catholic Church leader assured the young people who were drawn from Kenya’s 27 Dioceses of KCCB’s commitment to address the needs of the youth in the country.

He said the youth commission was looking to put in place strategies that he said would ensure that young people’s lives respond to the pastoral needs of the church.

Bishop Kimani expressed optimism that the youth commission would go a long way in helping the youth become stronger witnesses of Christ.

He underscored the importance of young people using their time, resources and energy to grow in their faith.

The recently consecrated Bishop further appealed to the youth to embrace hope saying, “We are the pilgrims of hope and we are the hope of our families, the church, and the entire society.”

In his homily at the event, Bishop Joseph Mwongela of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Kitui raised alarm over rising cases of gender based violence in the country, saying, “I challenge you to pray…Let’s stop gender based violence. Let’s learn to forgive.”

Highlighting some of the major challenges the young generation in Kenya is facing, Bishop Mwongela cautioned, “Drinks and drugs will ruin your lives. Don’t get into anything that you think is going to ruin your life. You need to be happy. You are too young to be carrying so many burdens.”
