Golden Jubilee of Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Ivory Coast Ends with Call on Members to be “fishers of men”

Members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Ivory Coast have been urged to embrace their identity as “fishers of men,” drawing inspiration from the Gospel’s call to evangelize and transform society.

In his homily during the concluding Mass of the Golden Jubilee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Ivory Coast, the President of the Episcopal Commission for the Apostolate of the Laity, Family, and Pilgrimages, urged the people of God to live out their mission with courage, unity, and faith.

“Like the first disciples called to leave their nets and follow Christ, you are called to be fishers of men in a world yearning for justice, truth, and peace,” Bishop Gbaya Boniface Ziri said during the December 1 Eucharistic celebration that was held at Our Lady of Peace Basilica in the Catholic Diocese of Yamoussoukro.

Bishop Ziri emphasized that the mission of evangelization must be rooted in fraternity and unity.

Drawing on the example of the first apostles, he reminded the people of God that the transformative power of the Holy Spirit thrives in communities united in love and purpose.

“It is by being united in Christ that the Word of God we proclaim will bear much fruit,” Bishop Ziri said referencing the theme of the Golden Jubilee, “As the Father has sent me, I also send you.”

Addressing the social challenges facing Ivory Coast, the Local Ordinary of Abengourou Diocese called on members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to shine as witnesses of peace and reconciliation.

He urged them to work toward healing divisions and bringing hope to those in need.

“A reconciled and fraternal Ivory Coast can emerge through your testimony as faithful who are on fire with the Spirit,” he said.

Bishop Ziri also challenged the faithful to rekindle their passion for mission, free of hesitation or human calculations.

“The first disciples responded without delay or demands for signs of reward. Their spontaneity contrasts sharply with our reluctance to answer the urgent call of mission,” he said.

He added, “The outpouring of the Spirit floods hearts today, transforming them into places of charism. This is not our own doing but the work of the Risen Christ.”

“We desire a more visible Church, dynamic Christian communities, and courageous Christians capable of being signs and witnesses of peace and integral development,” Bishop Ziri said during the December 1 Eucharistic celebration.
