At Perpetual Profession, Bishop in Guinea-Bissau Urges Catholic Nun to Emulate Prophet Jeremiah’s “resilience, faith”

Bishop José Lampra Cá of the Catholic Diocese of Bissau in Guinea-Bissau has urged a member of the Clarist Franciscan Missionaries of the Most Blessed Sacrament (CFMSS) who made her Perpetual Profession to draw inspiration from Prophet Jeremiah, fostering resilience in practicing her Christian faith.

In his homily during the December 14 Perpetual Profession of Sr. Belmira Sábado Fernando Tamba, Bishop Lampra Cá emphasized that the vocation to religious life requires perseverance, unwavering faith, and the ability to begin anew despite trials.

“The vocation of Jeremiah teaches us that being called by God means always being ready to begin anew, living a new life in light of the original call, without losing heart in the face of difficulties,” he said during the Eucharistic celebration that was held at the St. John the Baptist Parish of his Episcopal See.

He added, “Jeremiah was tasked with proclaiming the collapse of an entire social structure to lay the foundation for a renewed society. Though his mission was difficult, he did not fear, for Yahweh had prepared him long in advance.”

“You must follow Jeremiah’s example of resilience and faith as you embark on this new stage of your religious life,” Bishop Lampra Cá told Sr. Tamba.

He underscored the importance of cultivating an interior spiritual life through continuous listening to God’s Word.

“The relationship between life and prayer is central to the vocation. It is through this daily relationship that we draw strength to overcome crises and trials,” the Catholic Church leader said.

He said, “The definitive life begins when we commit to Jesus, embrace our human condition, and live for others. Jesus offered His flesh and blood for humanity, and commitment to Him demands that we, too, are ready to give our lives in service to others.”

Bishop Lampra Cá acknowledged the struggles of living such a call, pointing out that even some of Jesus’ disciples initially resisted His demands.

“Many clung to the idea of a Messiah but hesitated to follow Jesus to the point of sacrifice. However, the twelve apostles accepted Him fully, embracing the demands of His mission,” the Bishop of Bissau since January 2022 said.

In her speech during the Perpetual Profession, Sr. Tamba reaffirmed her commitment to live out her mission in line with the charism of her congregation.

“Together, let us return to our daily lives, strengthened in our resolve to love and serve, journeying toward a world of justice and fraternity,” Sr. Tamba said.

She added, “We immerse ourselves in the Eucharistic-missionary ministry that defines our charism, seeking to be bold witnesses of care, beauty, and hope for all our brothers and sisters.”
