Finance Committee, Presidential Council Meetings ahead of Plenary Assembly among RECOWA’s “major” Activities in New Year

Fr. Vitalis Anaehobi, RECOWA Secretary General

Preparations for the Plenary Assembly of the members of the Regional Episcopal Conference of West Africa (RECOWA) constitute the “major” activities of the Catholic Bishops’ forum that brings together Church leaders from some 16 countries of West Africa, the Secretary General has said.

In a circular to RECOWA members on New Year Day, which he shared with ACI Africa, Fr. Vitalis Anaehobi, says that the weeklong Plenary Assembly scheduled to start on May 5 will be preceded by a couple of meetings in February.

Fr. Anaehobi announces the two-day meeting of the members of the Finance Committee of RECOWA starting on February 10, to be immediately followed by that of the Presidential Council members, which is to run from February 12-13.

The two meetings are scheduled to take place in the capital city of Ivory Coast, Abidjan, he says in his January 1 message, adding, “The meetings will focus on the preparations for the RECOWA plenary assembly that will come up from 5-12 May 2025 in Dakar, Senegal.”

The Nigerian Catholic Priest emphasizes the need for early preparations and participation in the scheduled Plenary Assembly, saying, “Dear Fathers and Shepherds of the flock of Christ, we encourage you to take note of the forthcoming plenary assembly (5-12 May, Dakar) and reserve your ticket as soon as you can.”

We shall continue to pray for you and solicit your support in our service to you. We wish you a gracious new year,” RECOWA Secretary General says in his seven-point circular shared with ACI Africa.

In the circular, Fr. Anaehobi looks back at the just ended year, 2024, describing it as “quite eventful”, particularly with the second and final session of the multi-year Synod on Synodality that was concluded on October 27 in Rome and the realization of the RECOWA Secretariat infrastructure, among others

“Last year was quite eventful with the robust participation of RECOWA Bishops and priests, religious and lay faithful in the synod on synodality,” the Catholic Priest, who was one of the delegates that represented the Church in Africa at the Synod says.

Other significant achievements of He adds, “The 3-D design for the building of permanent secretariat for RECOWA in Abuja and the successful launching of the RECOWA Observatory for Peace.
