Members of the Africa Christian Professionals Forum (ACPF) have pledged to support the new leadership of the African Union Commission (AUC) in advancing “meaningful reforms” aimed at transforming the world’s second-largest continent.

In a congratulatory message published on their Facebook page on February 15, the election day of new AUC office bearers, ACPF members laud Mahamoud Ali Youssouf on his election as the Chairperson of the AUC and H.E. Selma Malika on her election as the Deputy Chairperson of the commission.

“Your leadership marks a new chapter in Africa’s journey toward unity, progress, and sustainable development,” ACPF members say in their message posted shortly after the Djibouti national was declared the winner of the elections.

They add, “As the continent advances towards the aspirations of #Agenda2063, ACPF looks forward to working closely with the African Union leadership in driving meaningful reforms that strengthen African States in all spheres—governance, economic development, peace and security, and social transformation.”

The newly elected AUC Chairman, Mr. Youssouf, has served as Djibouti's foreign minister since 2005. He secured the AUC top position after seven rounds of voting, obtaining the required 33 votes in the final round of the elections that took place on February 15 at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

He beat his main competitor, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and opposition leader, Raila Amolo Odinga, who dropped out of the race after the sixth round. The other contestant was Richard Randriamandrato, an ex-foreign minister of Madagascar. He dropped out of the race after the third round.

Djibouti's foreign minister is set to begin his four-year term in March 2025, succeeding Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, who has been at the helm of AUC since 2017.

In their February 15 congratulatory message, Africa’s Christian Professionals say, “Your leadership will be instrumental in shaping policies that uphold African values and ensure a prosperous, resilient, and inclusive future.”

They also express their best wishes for a “great success” in the mandates of the new AUC Chairperson and his Deputy, and “reaffirm” their commitment to supporting the African Union’s “vision for #TheAfricaWeWant.
