Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has expressed solidarity with members of the Missionary Sisters of Santo Domingo who were attacked by a criminal gang in their community.

In a statement shared with the information service of Propaganda Fide, Agenzia Fides, Fr. Clet-Clay Mamvemba, the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Kinshasa, relayed Cardinal Ambongo’s closeness with the Sisters who were attacked at their community in the Parish of Kimbanseke of Kinshasa.

“The Cardinal expressed his solidarity with the religious who were victims of this barbarism and encouraged them to resist and be guided by the light of hope,” Cardinal Ambongo said in the Agenzia Fides report published on March 21.

In the report, the Cardinal called on the various Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (ICLSAL) in the country “to increase their vigilance without giving in to panic or fear.”

Agenzia Fides reports that the attack on the Religious community of the Missionary Sisters of Santo Domingo took place on the night of March 18, when members of a gang group known as ‘Kaluna’, armed with machetes, broke into the Sisters’ premises through the wall.

Arriving at the community, they threatened the Sisters and stole from them. They stole items such as computers, telephones, and money.

Agenzia Fides says that a report had already been filed against the suspects.

The Agenzia Fides reports of the intensifying insecurity in Kinshasa where different criminal gangs are targeting civilians as well as premises of ICLSAL.

Kuluna criminal gang reportedly emerged in the 1990s to refer to urban youths from southwestern DRC, who had unlawfully migrated south to Angola in pursuit of diamonds. Since 2000, the term has evolved to broadly describe criminals.

And since early 2020, Kinshasa has experienced a rise in Kuluna gang activities, leading to an increase in violent crimes such as armed robbery and assaults.

The gang’s activities have reportedly extended beyond the capital, spreading to smaller cities across the Central African nation.
