Members of the Association of Ordinary Conference of Rwanda and Burundi (ACOREB) have decried the tension between the two neighboring countries the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where there is intense fighting.
In an address following their March 30 to April 1 Plenary Assembly in Rwanda, the Bishops decried, in particular, the closure of the border between the two countries, noting that the situation is hindering the nations’ growth.
“The closure of borders hinders economic growth, social cohesion, and cultural exchange,” the Bishops said in a statement they shared with the information service of Propaganda Fide, Agenzia Fides, following their assembly at the Saint Joseph Center in Kibungo.
They added, “We ask our leaders to act wisely and mercifully to restore normalcy and promote unity between our nations.”
The crisis between Rwanda and Burundi is linked to the crisis in eastern DRC, where large parts of the provinces of North and South Kivu have fallen under the control of the Rwandan-backed M23 guerrilla movement.
