Salesians in Sierra Leone Laud Partners for “unwavering support” in Reaching Out to Victims of Human Rights Violations

Members of the Institute of Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) have acknowledged the impactful contribution of partners in reaching out to children and young girls, whose fundamental rights have been violated in Sierra Leone.

In a Thursday, April 10 report, SDB officials highlight the positive impact of partners in enhancing the “overall well-being of youth” and helping them “thrive in their respective environments.”

The partners’ “unwavering support is making a lasting impact, transforming lives and paving the way for a brighter future for these children,” SDB officials say in the report that Mission Newswire, the Salesian missions official news service, published.

They add that the essential input from their partners, channelled through  their child welfare entity in Sierra Leone, Don Bosco Fambul, enables the beneficiaries to “concentrate on their education without the burden of financial challenges.”

“Recently, 35 school pupils and 50 skills training students received financial aid, food, and clothing through support from donors including Medicor Foundation, Jugend Eine Welt, and the City of Vienna,” SDB officials in Sierra Leone say.

They explain how the donations were distributed, saying, “Every beneficiary received a bag of rice to help meet their nutritional needs, a cash contribution to support daily expenses, and a packet of assorted clothing items to enhance their comfort and dignity.”

Through the child-welfare organization, SDB members, in the “2024-2025 academic year, supported 55 students in grades ranging from primary and senior secondary school”, where each student received a “school bag, learning materials” and monetary support for “school fees and other associated expenses.”

“This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the generous contributions of our incredible donors. We thank them for being a part of this journey,” the SDB officials say in the April 10 report.

The report further indicates that “over the last few years, Don Bosco Fambul has provided assistance for nearly 11,000 children and youth suffering violations of their fundamental rights.”

In close collaboration with “a large multidisciplinary team of social workers”, the report indicates, SDB members continue to transform the lives of young people in the West African nation, through education, enabling them to “to take control of their own lives.”

“Don Bosco Fambul also offers a 525 Childline toll-free number, available throughout the country, 24 hours a day/7 days a week for youth who suffer any type of violence,” the April 10 report further indicates referring to the initiative the SDB members launched in July 2024 in partnership with the Extremadura Agency for International Development Cooperation (AEXCID) and Atabal Foundation.

“The campaign includes training sessions for a variety of stakeholders including students, educators, family support units, women and girls, and community members,” SDB officials say in the April 10 report published under the title, “Sierra Leone: Young women who have been exploited receive comprehensive support.”
