New Ghanaian Apostolic Administrator Likens His Ministry to That of John the Baptist

The newly appointed Apostolic Administrator of Ghana's Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese, Fr. John Baptist Attakruh has likened his current ministry to that of John the Baptist.

Like John the Baptist who prepared the way for the Jesus Christ, the Ghanaian Cleric says, he is preparing the way for the appointment of a new Bishop.

“As I have been reflecting on my appointment in the past few days, I’ve come to understand my role as Apostolic Administrator to be like that of Saint John the Baptist – someone temporary holding the fort of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese to prepare the way whilst we all await the appointment of a new Bishop,” Fr. John Baptist said Sunday, August 23 during his first Mass as Apostolic Administrator at the Star of the Sea Cathedral, Takoradi.

He encouraged the people of God in the Diocese to “see the mission of the Church as a collective responsibility to be embraced by all and not just as the duty of one person. The mission of the Church is not the responsibility of one person.”

The Ghanaian Cleric further called on the faithful in Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese to support him with prayers saying, “I asked you all for your prayers as I assure you of mine. I will count on your prayers to aid me to discharge my duties diligently as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese.”

Pope Francis appointed Fr. John Baptist as Apostolic Administrator of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese on July 31. The Diocese has been under the leadership of Archbishop John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Local Ordinary of Accra.

The appointment was made public August 18 by the Chargé d'Affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in Ghana, Msgr. Paval Talapka.

Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese has been vacant since January 2019 following the transfer and elevation of the then Local Ordinary, Archbishop Kwofie to the Archdiocese of Accra.

“The new Apostolic Administrator has been appointed after taking into consideration the difficulty for Archbishop John B. Kwofie, until now the Apostolic Administrator of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese, to continue to administer the Diocese due to his health condition and also the distance from Accra,” Msgr. Paval said in the August 18 statement obtained by ACI Africa.

In his August 23 homily, Fr. John Baptist asked for prayers for Archbishop Kwofie “that God will grant him good health and strength to continue his work.”

The Apostolic Administrator who until his appointment was serving as the Director of the Diocesan Catechetical Institute of Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese was ordained a Priest on July 30, 1989.

In an interview with SekTadi TV a day after the announcement of his appointment, Fr. John Baptist called on the Clergy and Religious to unite and work together for the success of the pastoral mission in the Diocese.

He urged the youth in Ghana to be ambassadors of peace as the country prepares for the general elections in December saying, “Now we are in an election year. Don’t let yourself be used by anybody. You cannot get any good out of violence. Politics is about building up society. Learn to respect the opinions of others and work for peace.”

Established in November 1969, Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese has a population of about 438,700 Catholics, according to 2017 statistics. It is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Cape Coast.
