Christian leaders in Nigeria have hailed the appointment of their compatriot, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as the new Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In their Tuesday, February 16 statement, members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) “urge” the 66-year-old economist and international development expert to serve with the “impeccability of Daniel.”
On Monday, February 15, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala made history as the first woman and first African to be appointed to head the Geneva, Switzerland-based body whose main aim is to ensure that global trade flows smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.
“Our dear Sister, we urge you to lead the WTO with impeccability like Daniel did (Daniel 6) in Babylon so that the footprint of WTO might be positively felt in all countries of the world as it was never felt before,” the Christian leaders in Nigeria say in their statement obtained by ACI Africa.
They describe Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s appointment to WTO as “a giant stride for all women all over the world, being the first time, a woman is so appointed.”
