A Germany Catholic charity has facilitated a weeklong training of project and finance employees of South Sudan’s Wau Diocese in financial management that was organized to equip the staff with proper techniques of proposal and report writing in their respective departments.

Misereor, the German Catholic Bishops' entity for development cooperation, has facilitated the capacity building of over a dozen accountants and project managers in Wau Diocese, an initiative aimed at bridging the knowledge gap seen in projects in the South Sudanese episcopal see, Br. Sylvester Awash who coordinated the training told ACI Africa.

“We presented our proposal to our donor Misereor Germany, to build the capacity of our staff and fortunately, they approved it. We are carrying out the training on project proposals and financial reporting for accountants and managers in the diocese,” Br. Awash said April 16 at the close of the training.

Previously, partners used to facilitate capacity building initiatives away from Wau town, the member of St. Joseph Brothers of Wau Diocese (SJB) said, adding that due to COVID-19 restriction of inter-state movements, the staff could not travel out of the headquarters of the Diocese.

“This training is of great benefit because we usually used to send one person for the training but this particular one has become an opportunity for those who could have not gotten the chance,” the South Sudanese Brother told ACI Africa.

Focused on the understanding of proposal writing, report writing, and how to report on the usage of finances from donors, the course brought on board 16 staff of the Diocese from different departments to benefit from the training.

“We have selected staff from the management and finance departments of the institutions operating in the Diocese of Wau so that they carry out their duties professionally,” Br. Awash said, and added, “Some of the participants are from schools, others from Caritas, and the Radio station.”

He explained, “Staff have been facing many challenges, especially those who did not get a chance to go for training. Financial reporting and writing of proposals have been our challenges and that is the main reason we called for this training.”

The week-long training was meant to update and refresh staff knowledge, the SJB member, the Diocesan Brothers’ Congregation, which Comboni Bishop Edward Mason founded in 1940, told ACI Africa April 16.

He added, “A great takeaway is that we have been taken through all the stages of the proposal and report writing from the executive summary, the body, and the conclusion.”

According to Joseph Zachariah, a consultant and facilitator of the training, the workshop aimed “to enlighten participants on their duties and responsibilities, particularly in proposal writing, reporting and administration of project finance.”

Zachariah expressed the hope that participants will make use of the knowledge gained during the training to help the Diocesan institutions get funding for their respective projects.

“Having acquired the knowledge, I hope that the staff will be able to handle the proposal and report writing easily,” the official said at the end of the workshop April 16, and added, “Our finance officers will be able to summarize their accounting balance correctly.”
