Days before officially assuming office of Secretary General of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), Fr. Kennedy Seketa has passed on.

The 51-year-old Zambian Priest who was expected to officially begin his service as ZCCB Secretary General next week, on July 1, died Friday, June 25.

"Dear brother Priests, it is with deep sorrow and sadness that I have to announce to you all the passing on to the Lord of Very Rev. Fr. Kennedy Seketa, ZCCB Secretary General," the Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kasama, Fr. Rodgers Fikwamo, has been quoted as saying

In his message shared by Lutanda Catholic Radio News, Fr. Fikwamo encourages the Clergy, women and men Religious, and the Laity in the Zambian Metropolitan See to spiritual communion.

Fr. Seketa tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, June 21 and was receiving treatment at the Levy Mwanawasa Hospital in Zambia’s capital city, Lusaka, a source in the Southern African nation told ACI Africa June 25.

The member of the Clergy of Zambia’s Kasama Archdiocese had been appointed Secretary General of ZCCB on May 31, succeeding Fr. Cleophas Lungu who has been at the helm of the Zambia’s forum of Catholic Bishops since 2010.

Before his May 31 appointment, the late Priest had been serving as Rector of St. Dominic’s Major Seminary in Lusaka since 2014.

Last weekend, the late Fr. Seketa participated in the ordination of 25 Seminarians to Diaconate, an event that was presided over by Bishop Clement Mulenga of Zambia’s Kabwe Diocese.

Recalling the events of Saturday, June 19, Cecilia Zandile Zimba has posted on the Facebook page of the Zambian Major Seminary, “Fr. Seketa, I followed the proceedings on Saturday at the Ordination of the Deacons. I listened to you give a speech and you bade farewell to the Deacons, the students and gave your tributes to all your colleagues at St. Dominic's for it was the last time you would be addressing them as Rector of St Dominic. Little did we know that it was the last we would hear you speak at any occasion here on earth. Go well Fr. Seketa. This is heartbreaking. Rest in the peace of Christ.”

Born in March 1970, Fr. Seketa was ordained to the Priesthood in August 1999.

As a Priest, he served in various capacities among them Vicar General of Kasama Archdiocese and National Liturgical and Biblical Coordinator at ZCCB.

Speaking to Lumen TV after his appointment as ZCCB Secretary General, Fr. Seketa described the task he was expected to handle as "daunting."

“It has come during very challenging times of COVID-19 and Elections. It’s a daunting task, but worthwhile for the growth of the Church in Zambia," Fr. Seketa said June 1

He had added, “God makes every step, and everything possible, in his own way at his own time.”

Details of Fr. Seketa's funeral arrangements are to be communicated at a later time, Fr. Fikwamo said June 25.
