Buea, 14 February, 2022 / 9:45 pm (ACI Africa).
Catholic Bishops in Cameroon’s Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province have expressed their “solidarity and communion” with their colleague, Bishop Michael Bibi, who is facing attacks in what they have described as “gross disrespect of the hierarchy of the Church”.
In their collective statement dated February 11, members of the Bamenda Provincial Episcopal Conference (BAPEC) say their “hearts were deeply saddened by the unfortunate turn of events in the Diocese of Buea, characterized by gross disrespect of the hierarchy of the Church, casting of aspersions on Bishop Michael Bibi.”
BAPEC members say they are concerned about the “deliberate distortion and manipulation of facts in order to misinform, divide and mislead the public through social media and other media organs, on certain important decisions taken by the Bishop in his attempt to bring the Diocese to align perfectly with the mind and practices of the Church.”
“We express our solidarity and communion with His Lordship Bishop Michael Bibi, whose decisions are in perfect alignment with the mind and discipline of the Church on these matters,” BAPEC members emphasize in their February 11 statement shared with ACI Africa.
In an online petition launched a couple of months ago, the Local Ordinary of Buea is described as “an emperor and a tyrant Bishop who has destroyed Catholicism in Buea Diocese.”
