Chikwawa, 04 April, 2022 / 4:50 pm (ACI Africa).
Members of the Association of Catholic Journalists in Southern Malawi and an association of Lay faithful have donated a disaster relief package to flood victims in the Southeastern African nation.
A Monday, April 4 report indicates that the package, which includes food and non-food items, was handed over to the Catholic Development Commission of Malawi’s Chikwawa Diocese for distribution to flood survivors in Chikwawa and Nsanje districts.
“Being journalists, we are aware of the situation in evacuation camps and even the homes of the affected populations. That’s why we have mobilized funds to purchase these relief items,” the chair of social welfare of the Catholic Journalists association, Simeon Shumba, has been quoted as saying during the April 2 event.
Mr. Shumba adds, “We strongly believe we have a social obligation that goes beyond news reporting. In times of disaster like ours, we have to do something to at least help the afflicted.”
The donation comes as thousands of disaster-displaced households are still homeless and food insecure, the report indicates.
