Pope Francis overhauled the leadership of the Roman Curia on ADD DAY, days after the Vatican constitution took full effect.

The sweeping changes announced on ADD DATE included the appointment of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as prefect of the newly named Dicastery for Bishops. He succeeds the 77-year-old Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, who had led the Congregation for Bishops since 2010.

The apostolic constitution, Praedicate evangelium (“Preach the Gospel”), was released on March 19 after nine years in production by the pope’s Council of Cardinal Advisers. It went into effect on June 5, the Solemnity of Pentecost.

The constitution underlines that “any member of the faithful” can lead one of newly constituted Vatican dicasteries or other bodies, “given their particular competence, power of governance and function.”

Under the new constitution, all the Vatican’s main departments are now known as “dicasteries.”
