Pope Francis Appoints Two Auxiliary Bishops in DR Congo Local Ordinaries

Pope Francis has appointed two Bishops who have been serving as Auxiliary Bishops of Kinshasa Archdiocese in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as Local Ordinaries.

In the latest administrative changes published June 11 by the Holy See Press Office, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Vincent Tshomba Shamba Kotsho and Bishop Jean-Crispin Kimbeni Ki Kanda as Local Ordinaries for Tshumbe Diocese, and Kisantu Diocese respectively.

Bishop Tshomba is set to succeed Bishop Nicolas Djomo Lola who will turn 78 next month, and whose retirement has been accepted by Pope Francis.

A member of the Clergy of Kinshasa Archdiocese, Bishop Tshomba was ordained a Priest in 1990, and served in various capacities in the Archdiocese of Kinshasa, including Parish Priest, Parish Vicar, Diocesan Chaplain of Justice and Peace, and member of the Presbyterial council, among other responsibilities.

The Congolese Bishop was appointed auxiliary Bishop of Kinshasa in June 2020. He is to shepherd the people of God in Tshumbe Diocese that started as an Apostolic Vicariate in March 1947, before it was elevated to the rank of a Diocese on 10 November 1959.

The Diocese measures 60,000 square kilometres and, according to 2020 statistics, has an estimated population of about 447,680 Catholics.

In the latest Papal appointments, the Holy Father also appointed Bishop Kimbeni as the new Local Ordinary of the Congolese Catholic Diocese of Kisantu that is in the Ecclesiastical Province of Kinshasa.

A member of the Clergy of the Archdiocese of Kinshasa where he was ordained a Priest in 1999, the 52-year-old Congolese Bishop is to succeed Bishop Fidèle Nsielele Zi Mputu who resigned in November 2020 at the age of 70.

Bishop Kimbeni holds a master’s degree in bioethics obtained in 2011 from the Camillianum International Institute in Rome, which is affiliated to the Pontifical Lateran University.  He also holds a doctorate in Health Pastoral Theology obtained from the same institution in 2019.

The holder of a licentiate in philosophy obtained from the Catholic University of the Congo in 2001 was appointed auxiliary Bishop of Kinshasa in June 2020.

Bishop Kimbeni is to shepherd the people of God in Kisantu Diocese. Established in November 1959, the measures 31,000 square kilometres and has a Catholic population of about 687,510 as per 2019 statistics.
