Malakal, 13 September, 2022 / 11:30 pm (ACI Africa).
The first unified troops who graduated on August 30 in South Sudan need to be guided by the “Spirit of peace” for a successful mission, a Catholic Nun serving in the country’s Catholic Diocese of Malakal has said.
On August 30, South Sudan graduated over 21,000 new troops that are to constitute a unified national army, police, and other forces of security as part of the implementation of the country’s September 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
In an interview with ACI Africa, Sr. Elena Balatti said, “The priority task of these forces is to defend the lives of civilians, their property, and the country as a whole.”
“I do hope and pray that the troops will be guided by the spirit of peace in carrying out their duties,” Sr. Balatti told ACI Africa September 8.
In fostering the spirit of peace in their service, the member of the Comboni Missionary Sisters (CMS) added, “some of the reasons that are generating the conflicts will be avoided.”
