Nairobi, 16 October, 2022 / 9:50 pm (ACI Africa).
Ahead of the World Food Day (WFD) marked on October 16 annually, the leadership of the global confederation of Catholic relief agencies, Caritas Internationalis (CI), is calling on leaders across the globe, including Africa, to support “small-scale agriculture” in order to address “food injustice”.
In a Friday, October 14 report, CI officials say, “The only way to fight the current severe food crisis is to address the food injustice that stems from a lack of concern for the poorest and the most vulnerable and care for our common home.”
“Caritas Internationalis calls national governments, international institutions, and the global community to support local and small-scale agriculture as a long-term and sustainable solution against food insecurity,” officials of the global confederation of Catholic relief agencies say.
Their report indicates that “world food production is affected by three major factors: climate emergency, the impact of COVID-19, and conflicts.”
“This World Food day 2022 is marked by the war in Ukraine, which has contributed to the upheaval in global food and energy markets, with soaring food and fuel prices will further put millions at risk of hunger across the world,” CI Secretary General, Aloysius John, has been quoted as saying in the October 14 report.
