Pope Francis has condoled with victims of the tragic road accident in Senegal that reportedly killed at least 40 people and injured dozens more on Sunday, January 8.

The accident that involved two buses happened at around 0330 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in Gnivy village, in the Kaffrine region, in the West African nation.

In his Tuesday, January 10 telegram message addressed to President Macky Sall on behalf of the Holy Father, the Vatican Secretary of State says that Pope Francis “wishes to express his closeness and concern for the injured.”

“Having learned of the tragic road accident that occurred in Kaffrine on Saturday night, which claimed many lives, his holiness Pope Francis joins in the mourning of the families and of the entire nation,” says  Pietro Cardinal Parolin.

Cardinal Parolin adds that Pope Francis “prays that God will welcome the deceased into his peace and light and asks him to bring comfort and hope to all those affected by this tragedy.”

According to a media report, Senegal’s Public prosecutor, Cheikh Dieng, says that the crash happened on National Road No. 1 when a public bus punctured a tire and veered across the road, colliding with another bus coming from the opposite direction.

“At least 78 people are injured, some of them seriously,” a report by the National Public Radio (NPR), an American nonprofit media organization headquartered in Washington, D.C, indicates.

“Traffic crashes happen regularly in the West African nation because of poor roads, bad cars, and drivers not adhering to the rules,” locals say in the January 8 NPR report.

In a tweet following the accident, President Sall also condoled with the families of the victims and wished quick recovery to the injured.

“I am deeply saddened by today's tragic road accident in Gniby, resulting in 40 deaths and many serious injuries,” says the Senegalese president in his January 8 tweet message.
