In an ongoing free surgery of the eyes under the auspices of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yamdio (CDTY) in South Sudan, at least 180 patients have been reached and many more are expected in the coming days.

“There are over one hundred people to benefit from the ongoing free eye surgery,” CDTY Health Services Coordinator, Dr. Bati Camillo told ACI Africa in a Monday, March 6 interview.

Dr. Camillo added, “Currently, the team has accessed 182 people who have been treated through eye surgery and we expect the number to increase.”

“The targeted number was one hundred and thirty but due to the demand the number has increased,” he added about the eye surgery initiative that has been supported by the Missionary Community of St. Paul the Apostle of CDTY, the medical doctors having reached out to patients across the South Sudanese Diocese, beginning with Tombura hospital followed by Ave Maria Mission hospital (Rii-Menze), Ezo, Yambio, and finally St. Theresa Hospital Nzara.

CDTY Health Services Coordinator looked back at the beneficiaries of the initiative, saying, “Some of these patients had surgery on one eye, and others on both eyes with most suffering from cataracts.”

“Whoever is getting our message should come to St. Theresa hospital anytime because we have our team there to help them,” Dr. Camillo said about the latest eye surgery initiative that started March 3.

He also encouraged patients to “come and get eyeglasses to help them to see and read well.”

Dr. Bati emphasized that this campaign is not only for Western Equatoria State but for the whole country, urging citizens from across the country to seek treatment.

“It’s very important for the patients to see again so that they can take care of their families like they used to do before,” he further said.

In the March 6 interview with ACI Africa, Dr. Camillo said the surgery initiative was being realized following the request of the Local Ordinary of CDTY, Bishop Edward Hiiboro Kussala.
