Do Not Get “carried away by corruption”: Angolan Bishop to Catholic Leaders

Bishop Emílio Sumbelelo of Vianna Diocese, Angola.

At the official launch of the activities of Angola’s Christian Association of Managers and Leaders (ACGD) for the new year, the Bishop of Viana, Emílio Sumbelelo appealed to ACGD members to live exemplary lives guided by the spirit of stewardship and related virtues.

“As Members of this great association, you must lead a life of integrity worth emulating. Integrity requires the member not to let himself be carried away by corruption,” Bishop Sumbelelo told close to 100 ACGD members Tuesday, February 4 during the solemn Mass.

He added, “Integrity also implies knowing how to refuse gifts, pecuniary or material advantages from anyone, which may represent an improper relationship, that is, an act of corruption.”

“We want to count on you in this urgent and singular hour to leave for our Church and our nation,” the Angolan Prelate said and continued, “We want to count on you as baptized men and women, as Catholic men and women who have a good mastery of the Social Doctrine of the Church to make a difference in our society.”

He emphasized, “At a time when man wants to put God aside, to give up his history and build his history without God, the Catholic Church wants to have a strong laity who can bring God and his message of justice and peace to temporal realities.”

Created in February 2009, ACGD is a Catholic non-profit association made up of leaders and businessmen and women who are Catholic by baptism.

Members are called upon to live as the “salt of the earth and light of the world” inside or outside the Church. Managers and leaders are also invited to be models of life for others to emulate, the Bishop said.

“We all know the importance of salt in our daily life,” Bishop Sumbelelo said and explained, “Salt serves to give a good taste to food. Also, with your conduct in carrying out your activities we are called to be models for our brothers.”

According to Angolan Prelate, “Salt serves to save food from corruption. If we want to prepare fish, we put salt so that it does not spoil, so that it is not corrupted.”

ACGD also aims to deepen, spread and apply in practice the Church's Christian and social doctrine regarding business life, the promotion of the integral development of the people of God in society.

More in Africa

“Each one of you in this troubled universe of ours must be an ambassador of the gospel message ready to apply in practice the Christian and social doctrine of the Church concerning business life the promotion of peace, social justice and individual development for a better world,” the Local Ordinary of Vianna diocese insisted.

“We must fight for equity in the relationship, which presupposes a spirit of justice based on integrity, that is to say, a natural justice as a willingness to recognize with impartiality the right of each one,” Bishop Sumbelelo concluded.

ACGD is implanted in 15 of the 19 dioceses of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) and is preparing to launch a campaign to combat corruption, in collaboration with some public institutions and international agencies.
