Learners at Don Bosco Gatenga in Rwanda’s Catholic Archdiocese of Kigali are taking part in a clean-up exercise that is part of their initiative to realize Pope Francis’ 2015 Encyclical Letter “on care for our common home”, Laudato Si’.
In a report published Wednesday, April 26, members of the Religious Institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) who are at the helm of the institution of learning say the clean-up exercise that is realized by the school’s Green Club members involves the collection of plastic material “and other non-biodegradable waste”.
“Don Bosco Gatenga Green Club, in Kigali, Rwanda, participated in clean-up work to protect the environment. Students collected plastic and other non-biodegradable waste that degrade natural resources, including the water and soil,” the Salesian officials say.
They add, “Most of this waste is thrown into the water channel by people upstream, and it ends up spreading downstream where it contributes to environmental damage. The students used their spare time to volunteer for this effort.”
Youth who train at the Don Bosco soccer field at the Don Bosco Kabgayi Oratory, Kigali, have also been oriented about initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.
