Let’s Pray for Venerable Edel Quinn’s Canonization: Official of Legion of Mary in Kenya

In the interview with ACI Africa, Dr. Mutuma further called on the people of God in the countries where the Legion of Mary pioneer in East and Central Africa visited “to do much work for the Church in recognition of her hard work.”

He also called on the Legionaries to “follow the steps of Edel Quinn, visiting people, recruiting many people, and then continuing with the apostolate as she did.”

“Legionaries are the people who should follow the humility, and spirituality of Edel, to assist other Christians to come closer to the Church,” Dr. Mutuma said during the May 13 event that took place some meters to St. Austin’s Mission Cemetery where Venerable Edel Quinn was laid to rest in 1944.

The Irish-born Servant of God Frank Duff formed the first presidium (basic unit of the association at Parish level) of the Legion of Mary on 7 September 1921.

In 1957 the Local Ordinary of Nairobi, Archbishop John Joseph McCarthy started off the Diocesan process of Edel Quinn's canonization. Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable on 15 December 1994.

Also speaking to ACI Africa during the May 13 event, Legion of Mary Spiritual Director in Uganda, Fr. Joseph Michael Miro, said, “It’s important to celebrate the Venerable Edel Quinn because she was a symbol of unity for Catholics.”

“It’s very important for us to emulate Edel because she portrays the image of the Legion Mary as the unity of brothers and sisters irrespective of country, age, sex, and different cultures,” Fr. Miro said.

The Ugandan Catholic Priest added, “As Legionaries, we need to drive forward in the course of salvation brought to us by Jesus Christ.”

“For those who want to join us in this journey the door is open because we need more legionaries to continue with this apostolate,” Fr. Miro told ACI Africa during the event that brought over 150 pilgrims from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Malawi.
